about
In 2019, The Mars Rover Opportunity transmitted the message "My battery's low, and it's getting dark" after getting caught in a dust storm. After a while, feeling emotionally attached to the robot they had been watching over for years, the scientists at NASA wanted to send back one last message to confirm that Opportunity's battery had in fact died. They decided to send an audio recording of Billie Holliday's "I'll Be Seeing You", to which they received no reply.
That was the only thing on my mind in the summer of 2020, as I flew to Alabama to see my grandmother for the last time.
lyrics
Dust Storm Darlin’
Where have you gone?
I can’t for the life of me find you
Through the darkening sun.
But still i can hear you
Wherever you are.
You tell me your battery’s low
And it’s getting dark.
But I'm keeping my watch,
Keeping my eyes on our breathless divide.
I sent you a message,
I’m hopin’ that you can reply:
I’ll be seein’ you
In the morning.
I remember when
You were soaring far from me.
If it’s to be
That I’m not there when you leave,
At least we had this opportunity.
Dust Storm Darlin’
Shrouded in blankets of dirt.
I’m tryin’ to peel back the rubble,
There’s something I need to unearth.
The space that’s between us,
The granular blip on the screen,
Will it give me a final-rites sign of life
Cue that you’re drifting to sleep.
Now I’m dreaming you’re here
And you’re free of that
Rattling, statical breath.
I’m holdin’ you tight like a child,
And I’m scared cuz I don’t know what’s next.
I’ll be seein’ you
In the morning.
I remember when
You were soaring far from me.
If it’s to be
That I’m not there when you leave,
At least we had this opportunity.
So I’m tryin’ my best not to act
Like you think you’ll be headed back home.
Then you state like a fact
You’ve got plans with me before you go.
At least that’s what I hear you say.
Like a prophecy heavens away,
Or from an old familiar place.
I’ll be seein’ you
In the morning.
I remember when
You were soaring far from me.
If it’s to be
That I’m not there when you leave,
At least we had this opportunity.
